Buying Guide
Most Toyotas sold in the U.S. are built in the U.S. Here’s which plant builds each model for 2026, how to read your VIN to confirm it, and what “American-made” really means for a Japanese automaker.
Toyota is a Japanese company, but most of the Toyotas on American roads were built in Kentucky, Indiana, Texas, Mississippi or Alabama. Toyota operates 11 U.S. manufacturing plants and has built more than 34 million vehicles here. The Camry, Corolla, Corolla Cross, Highlander, Grand Highlander, Sienna, Tundra and Sequoia are all U.S.-assembled, and as of mid-2026 the RAV4 Hybrid is too. Trucks, hybrids and a few specialty models come from Mexico, Canada and Japan. Toyota itself is a publicly traded Japanese company, not owned by any individual, family or foreign government.

It depends on what you mean. Toyota Motor Corporation is headquartered in Toyota City, Japan, and its North American headquarters is in Plano, Texas. Toyota has operated in the U.S. for nearly 70 years, employs roughly 50,000 people here, and in November 2025 announced up to $10 billion in additional U.S. investment, bringing its total to nearly $60 billion.
By the measure most shoppers care about, where the vehicle is assembled and where its parts come from, several Toyotas rank among the most American-made vehicles sold. In the 2026 Cars.com American-Made Index, Toyota placed 14 vehicles on the list, more than any other automaker, with the Camry, Tundra and Corolla Cross Hybrid all in the top 20. The index weighs assembly location, U.S. and Canadian parts content, U.S. factory employment, and engine and transmission sourcing.
Short version: Toyota is a Japanese company that builds most of its U.S.-market vehicles in the U.S.
Toyota is not owned by any one person, family or country. Toyota Motor Corporation is a publicly traded Japanese company, listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange (ticker TM), with shares held by institutional investors, affiliated companies such as Toyota Industries, and millions of individual shareholders. It is not Chinese-owned and never has been; it is headquartered in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan.
The company was founded in 1937 by Kiichiro Toyoda as a spin-off of his father Sakichi Toyoda’s loom-manufacturing business, Toyoda Automatic Loom Works (today’s Toyota Industries). The spelling was changed from “Toyoda” to “Toyota” for the car company. The Toyoda family still holds a small stake and a founding role; Akio Toyoda, Kiichiro’s grandson, is chairman of the board, and Kenta Kon has been president and CEO since April 2026. The largest single shareholder is a Japanese trust bank holding about 13% on behalf of pension and investment funds; no individual or family controls the company.
Toyota is the largest automaker in the world by volume, building roughly 10 million vehicles a year across more than 50 plants in about 28 countries. In the U.S., Toyota Motor North America (Plano, Texas) runs sales, engineering and the 11 U.S. manufacturing plants listed above.
Look at the first character of the 17-character VIN. It’s on the driver’s-side dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver’s door jamb sticker, and your registration and insurance card.
| VIN starts with | Built in |
|---|---|
| 1, 4 or 5 | United States |
| 2 | Canada |
| 3 | Mexico |
| J | Japan |
| W | Germany (Supra: built in Austria, badged under BMW’s “W” code) |
The door-jamb label also lists the country of final assembly and the percentage of U.S./Canadian parts content, as required by the American Automobile Labeling Act. For a full decode, use the free NHTSA VIN decoder.
No. Every Toyota sold in the U.S. is built to the same standard, carries the same factory warranty, and is serviced the same way. Toyota’s U.S., Canadian, Mexican and Japanese plants all use the Toyota Production System. The plant matters for the “American-made” question, not for how the vehicle will hold up.
