What Does TRD Mean? Toyota TRD Trims Explained

TRD stands for Toyota Racing Development. Here’s what the badge means on a Tacoma, 4Runner, Tundra or Sequoia, how TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro differ, what each costs for 2026, and which one is worth your money.

TRD stands for Toyota Racing Development, Toyota’s factory performance and racing division. On a new Toyota, a TRD badge means the truck or SUV left the factory with TRD-tuned suspension and off-road hardware, in one of four grades: TRD PreRunner, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro. TRD trims are offered on the Tacoma, 4Runner, Tundra and Sequoia for 2026. No Toyota car carries a TRD trim anymore; the performance cars are GR models.

Last reviewed: October 2026. Trims and prices are for the 2026 model year and change yearly; we check this page each model year against Toyota’s published lineup.

What TRD Stands For

TRD is Toyota Racing Development. In the U.S. it’s TRD U.S.A., a subsidiary of Toyota Motor North America established in 1979 and headquartered in Costa Mesa, California, with a chassis engineering center in Salisbury, North Carolina. It started as a small Southern California speed shop building parts for Toyota racers, and Toyota brought it in-house in the early 1980s. The name goes back further in Japan, where Toyota’s racing arm was renamed Toyota Racing Development in 1976.

TRD does three things. It builds and supports Toyota’s race programs (NASCAR, NHRA, IMSA, Baja and desert racing). It develops performance parts sold through Toyota dealers as Genuine Accessories: wheels, suspension, intakes, exhausts and body kits. And, the part most shoppers care about, it tunes the factory TRD trims of Toyota’s trucks and SUVs. The first TRD Off-Road Tacoma went on sale in 1998; the TRD Pro series arrived for the 2015 model year.

If you’ve seen it written “TDR” or “TRO,” those are the same thing misspelled. The badge on the truck reads TRD.

TRD vs. GR: Which Is Which

Toyota has two performance names, and they split cleanly. GR (Gazoo Racing) is Toyota’s global performance brand. It’s the name on the purpose-built sports cars (GR86, GR Corolla, GR Supra) and, since the 2025 season, on all of Toyota’s North American racing, which now competes as Toyota Gazoo Racing North America. TRD is the North American brand for trucks and SUVs: the TRD trims and packages on Tacoma, 4Runner, Tundra and Sequoia, plus TRD-branded accessories. TRD U.S.A. still does the engineering behind Toyota’s race trucks, which keep the TRD name.

The short version: if it’s a car built to go fast, it’s GR. If it’s a truck or SUV built to go off-road, it’s TRD. Toyota has said more than half of its body-on-frame trucks and SUVs are sold with a TRD package.

TRD Sport vs. TRD Off-Road vs. TRD Pro

These three are the heart of the question. They’re built for different jobs, and the names tell you which.

Grade Built for What you get Drive
TRD PreRunner Desert-truck look on a budget (Tacoma only) Electronically locking rear differential, front lift stance, all-terrain tires, XtraCab two-seat body. 2WD only
TRD Sport Pavement, with the look TRD sport-tuned suspension, larger street wheels (18-in Tacoma, 20-in 4Runner), hood scoop, sport styling. No locker, no terrain software. 2WD or 4WD
TRD Off-Road Trails, mud, snow Bilstein monotube shocks with remote or piggyback reservoirs, all-terrain tires, electronic locking rear differential, underbody protection, Multi-Terrain Select and Crawl Control. 4WD standard (Tacoma offers 4×2 too)
TRD Pro Fast over rough ground; the flagship TRD-tuned FOX 2.5-in internal-bypass shocks (QS3 adjustable on Tacoma and 4Runner), 33-in all-terrain tires on black wheels, heritage “TOYOTA” grille, aluminum front skid plate, i-FORCE MAX hybrid standard, exclusive annual color. 4WD only

TRD Sport vs. TRD Off-Road

This is the one people get wrong. TRD Sport is a styling and handling package: firmer suspension, bigger wheels, a hood scoop. It rides well and looks the part, but it has none of the trail hardware. TRD Off-Road is the real off-road grade: reservoir Bilsteins, a rear locker, skid plates, all-terrain tires and the terrain-management software. On a 4Runner the price difference between the two is about $1,900; on a Tacoma at the same 4×4 spec it’s a few hundred dollars. If you’ll ever leave pavement, Off-Road is the better buy.

TRD Off-Road vs. TRD Pro

TRD Pro takes the Off-Road’s hardware and replaces the shocks with TRD-tuned FOX internal-bypass units built for speed over washboard and whoops, adds 33-inch tires, standard i-FORCE MAX, the heritage grille and model-specific extras (IsoDynamic shock-absorbing seats on Tacoma, TRD intake and exhaust on 4Runner, BBS forged wheels on Tundra and Sequoia). It costs roughly $12,000 to $22,000 more than a TRD Off-Road depending on model and options. The Pro is the truck for people who drive fast on dirt; the Off-Road does everything else.

What is the TRD Off-Road Package?

On Tundra and Sequoia, TRD Off-Road is a package added to SR5, Limited, Platinum or 1794 rather than a trim of its own. It brings the same idea: Bilstein shocks, skid plates, electronic rear locker, Multi-Terrain Select, Crawl Control, Multi-Terrain Monitor, TRD wheels and badging. On Tacoma and 4Runner, TRD Off-Road is a trim level, and a “Premium” version adds comfort and tech (power seats, the 14-inch screen, hands-free liftgate on 4Runner) without changing the off-road hardware.

TRD on the Tundra and Sequoia

The full-size trucks do it differently: TRD Pro is a trim, and everything else TRD is a package on a regular trim.

  • TRD Off-Road Package (SR5, Limited, Platinum, 1794): TRD grille, Bilstein off-road suspension, skid plates, electronic rear locker, Multi-Terrain Select, Crawl Control, Multi-Terrain Monitor, TRD wheels. The 1794 version gets power running boards for 2026.
  • TRD Rally Package: 18-in TRD wheels on all-terrain tires, Bilsteins, skid plates, rear locker, terrain software, and red-orange-yellow Baja-heritage graphics. New for 2026, a TRD 3-inch lift kit and Tow Tech Package can be added.
  • TRD Pro (about $72,500 base): 2.5-in FOX internal-bypass shocks, 1.1-in front lift, TRD upper control arms and front stabilizer bar, aluminum skid plate, 18-in BBS forged wheels on Falken all-terrain tires, i-FORCE MAX standard (437 hp, 583 lb-ft). IsoDynamic seats are newly optional for 2026.

The Land Cruiser has no TRD trim or package. See our Tundra buying guide for the full trim walk.

TRD Pro: What’s Exclusive, and the 2026 Color

Toyota introduced TRD Pro at the 2014 Chicago Auto Show for the 2015 Tundra, Tacoma and 4Runner, drawing on its Baja 500 and 1000 racing history. Every TRD Pro since has shared the same formula: TRD-tuned shocks (FOX internal-bypass on all current models), a heritage “TOYOTA” block-letter grille, a TRD aluminum front skid plate, black wheels on all-terrain tires, and one exclusive paint color that changes every year. For 2026, all four TRD Pros are i-FORCE MAX hybrids.

The 2026 TRD Pro color is Wave Maker

Wave Maker is a deep blue developed by Toyota’s CALTY design studio, the 11th annual TRD Pro color, offered on the 2026 Tacoma, 4Runner, Tundra and Sequoia TRD Pro and nothing else. The earlier colors, if you’re shopping used: Inferno (2015), Quicksand (2016), Cement (2017), Cavalry Blue (2018), Voodoo Blue (2019), Army Green (2020), Lunar Rock (2021), Electric Lime (2022), Solar Octane (2023), Terra (2024) and Mudbath (2025). Each TRD Pro also comes in a few standard colors, typically white, black and a gray or silver.

TRD Pro vs. Trailhunter

Toyota now sells two flagship off-road grades on Tacoma and 4Runner at nearly the same price, and they answer different questions. TRD Pro is built for speed on rough ground: FOX QS3 shocks, IsoDynamic seats on Tacoma, TRD intake and exhaust on 4Runner. Trailhunter is Toyota’s factory overlanding build, meant for loaded, slow-speed trail travel: Old Man Emu shocks, ARB roof rack and steel rear bumper, high-clearance front bumper, rock rails, a high-mount air intake and onboard air compressor on 4Runner, bronze wheels. Both are i-FORCE MAX only, 4WD only, on 33-inch tires with Stabilizer Disconnect standard. If you camp from the truck, Trailhunter. If you drive it hard, Pro.

Does Toyota Make TRD Cars?

Not anymore. Toyota’s only TRD sedans were the Camry TRD and Avalon TRD, introduced as 2020 models with lowered springs, retuned shocks, bigger front brakes, a cat-back exhaust, 19-inch matte-black wheels and a CALTY aero kit. The Avalon TRD ended with the Avalon in 2022, and the Camry TRD ended with the 2024 model year when the Camry went hybrid-only. There was never a factory Corolla TRD in the U.S.; the performance Corolla is the GR Corolla. For 2026, TRD trims exist only on the Tacoma, 4Runner, Tundra and Sequoia. A used Camry TRD is worth a look if you want a sharper Camry with a V6; it’s a Camry SE underneath.

TRD Parts, Accessories and the Warranty

You don’t have to buy a TRD trim to get TRD parts. Toyota sells TRD-branded Genuine Accessories through dealers for most models: wheels, lift kits (including a 3-inch Tundra lift), performance exhausts and air intakes, shocks and springs, skid plates, and cosmetic pieces like shift knobs, graphics and lug nuts. Our parts department can quote any of them for your VIN.

Does TRD void the warranty?

No. A TRD trim is a factory build and carries the full new-vehicle warranty. Genuine TRD accessories carry their own Toyota warranty: installed at the time of new-vehicle purchase, they’re covered for 36 months/36,000 miles from the in-service date; added later, for 12 months regardless of mileage or the remainder of the vehicle warranty, whichever is longer. Dealer-installed accessories include labor; parts bought over the counter and installed elsewhere are parts-only. Non-Toyota aftermarket parts are a different story: under the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, Toyota can’t void your warranty just because an aftermarket part is on the truck, but it can decline to cover a failure that part caused. Keep the receipts and use a shop that knows the vehicle.

Is TRD Worth It?

It depends which TRD you mean.

  • TRD Off-Road is the value pick. For roughly $2,000 to $2,500 over a comparable SR5 or TRD Sport you get the locker, reservoir Bilsteins, all-terrain tires, skid plates and the terrain software: the parts that cost far more to add later and that hold their value at trade-in. It’s also the TRD most buyers around Enfield actually use, because the hardware that handles a trail handles a New England winter.
  • TRD Sport is a look-and-feel upgrade. Worth it if you want the firmer ride and the styling and never plan to leave the road. Don’t buy it expecting off-road ability.
  • TRD Pro and Trailhunter are specialist trucks. They add $15,000 or more in shocks, tires, seats and armor over an Off-Road. Worth every dollar if you’ll use them, and overkill if what you want is the badge and the color.

Resale favors TRD across the board. Toyota trucks hold value, and TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro consistently sit at the top of the used market, which is why “used Tacoma TRD Off-Road” is one of the most-searched truck phrases in the country.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked

What does TRD stand for?

Toyota Racing Development. It’s Toyota’s factory performance and racing division; in the U.S., TRD U.S.A. was established in 1979 in Costa Mesa, California. On a Toyota truck or SUV, the TRD badge means a factory trim or package with TRD-tuned suspension and off-road hardware: TRD PreRunner, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road or TRD Pro.

What does TRD mean on a Tacoma?

It’s one of four factory grades. TRD PreRunner is 2WD with a locking rear differential. TRD Sport has sport-tuned suspension and bigger wheels for pavement. TRD Off-Road is 4WD with Bilstein reservoir shocks, a rear locker, all-terrain tires and Multi-Terrain Select. TRD Pro is the flagship with FOX internal-bypass shocks, 33-inch tires, IsoDynamic seats and the i-FORCE MAX hybrid.

What is the difference between TRD Sport and TRD Off-Road?

TRD Sport is for pavement: firmer sport-tuned suspension, larger street wheels and a hood scoop, available in 2WD or 4WD, with no locker or terrain software. TRD Off-Road is for trails and snow: Bilstein shocks with reservoirs, all-terrain tires, an electronic locking rear differential, skid plates, and Multi-Terrain Select with Crawl Control. At the same 4×4 spec the price gap is small, so Off-Road is the better buy if you’ll ever leave the road.

What is the difference between TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro?

TRD Pro keeps the Off-Road’s locker and terrain software and adds TRD-tuned FOX 2.5-inch internal-bypass shocks built for speed over rough ground, 33-inch all-terrain tires on black wheels, the heritage TOYOTA grille, a standard i-FORCE MAX hybrid, an exclusive annual color, and model-specific extras like IsoDynamic seats (Tacoma) or a TRD intake and exhaust (4Runner). It costs roughly $12,000 to $22,000 more depending on model.

4Runner TRD Pro vs. TRD Off-Road Premium: which should I buy?

TRD Off-Road Premium ($55,770 gas, $58,570 hybrid) has the same locker, Bilstein reservoir shocks, 33-inch tires and terrain software as the Pro, plus the comfort features, and for 2026 the hybrid can add Stabilizer Disconnect. TRD Pro ($67,900) adds FOX QS3 shocks, standard Stabilizer Disconnect, TRD intake and exhaust, the LED light-bar grille and the Wave Maker color. Unless you drive fast on dirt, Off-Road Premium does the job for $9,000 to $12,000 less.

What is the TRD Off-Road package?

On Tundra and Sequoia, TRD Off-Road is a package added to SR5, Limited, Platinum or 1794 trims: Bilstein off-road shocks, skid plates, an electronic locking rear differential, Multi-Terrain Select, Crawl Control, Multi-Terrain Monitor, TRD wheels and badging. On the 2026 Tundra it runs about $3,600. On Tacoma and 4Runner, TRD Off-Road is a full trim level instead.

What is the 2026 TRD Pro color?

Wave Maker, a deep blue developed by Toyota’s CALTY design studio. It’s the 11th annual TRD Pro exclusive color and is offered only on the 2026 Tacoma, 4Runner, Tundra and Sequoia TRD Pro. It replaces Mudbath (2025) and Terra (2024).

What colors does the Tacoma TRD Pro come in?

For 2026: the exclusive Wave Maker blue plus a short list of standard colors, typically white, black and a gray or silver. The one-year TRD Pro colors by year are Inferno (2015), Quicksand (2016), Cement (2017), Cavalry Blue (2018), Voodoo Blue (2019), Army Green (2020), Lunar Rock (2021), Electric Lime (2022), Solar Octane (2023), Terra (2024), Mudbath (2025) and Wave Maker (2026), which is a quick way to date a used one.

How much horsepower does a TRD Pro have?

All 2026 TRD Pros are i-FORCE MAX hybrids. Tacoma and 4Runner TRD Pro: 326 hp and 465 lb-ft from the 2.4-liter turbo hybrid. Tundra and Sequoia TRD Pro: 437 hp and 583 lb-ft from the 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 hybrid.

Does the Tacoma TRD Pro come with a manual transmission?

No. TRD Pro is i-FORCE MAX only, and the hybrid pairs only with the 8-speed automatic. The six-speed manual is available on the gas 4×4 TRD Sport and TRD Off-Road.

Is TRD 4WD?

Not always. TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro and Trailhunter are 4WD (Tacoma TRD Off-Road also offers a 4×2). TRD Sport comes in 2WD or 4WD on both Tacoma and 4Runner, and the base price Toyota lists is the 2WD version. TRD PreRunner is 2WD only.

Which Toyota models have TRD trims in 2026?

Tacoma (TRD PreRunner, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro), 4Runner (TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro), Tundra (TRD Pro trim; TRD Off-Road and TRD Rally packages) and Sequoia (TRD Pro trim; TRD Off-Road package). The Land Cruiser has no TRD content.

Is there a TRD Pro Highlander or RAV4?

No. TRD trims are only on Toyota’s body-on-frame trucks and SUVs: Tacoma, 4Runner, Tundra and Sequoia. The Highlander, Grand Highlander and RAV4 are unibody crossovers and have never had a TRD grade, though TRD accessories like wheels are sold for some of them.

Does Toyota still make a Camry TRD or Corolla TRD?

No. The Camry TRD and Avalon TRD were Toyota’s only TRD cars, sold as 2020 through 2024 (Camry) and 2020 through 2022 (Avalon). The Camry TRD ended when the Camry went hybrid-only for 2025. There was never a factory Corolla TRD in the U.S.; the performance Corolla is the GR Corolla.

What is the difference between TRD and GR?

GR (Gazoo Racing) is Toyota’s global performance-car brand: GR86, GR Corolla, GR Supra, and since 2025 the name on all of Toyota’s North American racing. TRD is the North American truck and SUV brand: the TRD trims and packages on Tacoma, 4Runner, Tundra and Sequoia, plus TRD accessories. Cars built for speed are GR; trucks built for off-road are TRD.

Do TRD parts void the Toyota warranty?

No. TRD trims are factory builds under the full new-vehicle warranty. Genuine TRD accessories are warranted by Toyota: 36 months/36,000 miles if installed at purchase, or 12 months regardless of mileage if added later. Non-Toyota aftermarket parts can’t void your warranty by themselves under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, but Toyota can decline to cover a failure that an aftermarket part caused.

Is TRD worth it?

TRD Off-Road is: for about $2,000 to $2,500 over an SR5 or TRD Sport you get the locker, reservoir shocks, all-terrain tires, skid plates and terrain software that cost far more to add later and hold value at trade-in. TRD Sport is worth it only for the look and firmer ride. TRD Pro and Trailhunter add $15,000 or more of specialist hardware; worth it if you’ll use it.
