Toyota Cements Status as Unrivaled Hybrid Automaker with 8 Million Units Sold

Toyota Hits 8 Million Mark for Hybrids Sold Worldwide

When the first Toyota Prius appeared on the automotive scene in 1997, it was simply the next new automotive technology. Pairing the power of a gas-powered engine with the efficiency of an electric motor was a novel idea that many likely thought wouldn’t last. That trend of high-power efficiency has continued to spread throughout the industry and with their success as an elite hybrid automaker in the industry, Toyota has cemented its position as one of the best. With news that Toyota hits the 8 million mark for hybrids sold worldwide, that success has now become tangible.

In 1995, when Toyota engineers began the development and design of the Toyota Prius concept that would later become an icon in the Toyota model lineup it was a frustrating process. In initial testing phases, it took 49 days to get the Toyota Prius prototype to even move and even then it only went 500 meters. The iconic hybrid has now come full circle and is ready to hit the streets this fall with the 2016 Toyota Prius edition, which is expected to achieve up to 60 mpg combined. If the Prius isn’t your speed, there are hybrid variants of other popular models, including the all-new 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, the eight hybrid in the Toyota stable.
