Check Out Some Great Local Hiking Trails in the Hartford, CT Area
With the weather heating up in preparation for summer, much of the Enfield, CT area is eager to spend more time outside in a safe manner. One great option to experience the outdoors is on the many hiking trails in the area. They’re great exercise with friends, family, or your pet, and can provide some great views with plenty of open space. Located in East Windsor, Enfield and Somers, CT, the Scantic River Trail offers around 7.4 miles of trails with several locations to park. Established as a state park in 1989, the park offers a range of different areas to check out with friends and/or pets. It offers plenty of views with trees along its riverside that make for a quaint and enjoyable hike.
Found on the west side of the Connecticut River in Suffield, CT, the Windsor Locks Canal State Park Trail is a great option for anyone who enjoys a bit of history with their hike. Offering a 4.5-mile trail, it follows a waterway over 170 years old. The canal itself offers plenty of photo-worthy sections of both the water as well as the vistas in the area.
Southwest of Windsor Locks is Northwest Park, one of the more popular hiking destinations in the area. Offering up to 12 miles of walking trails, the 473-acre park has a wide range of activities to check out. From educational classes and a nature center to historical spaces and the Heritage Breed farm, you can learn about Connecticut’s local past while enjoying the weather. Plus, it provides a great opportunity for Maple sugaring!
Located east of Somers, CT is the Whitaker Woods Nature Preserve. Managed by the Northern CT Land Trust, the location provides miles of walking paths. While you can explore the 266 acres of space, several trails connect to the McCann Family Farm trail as well. Plus, it’s a great place to check out if you’re looking to get more involved with the local environmental community cleanup projects.
